Inspiring story from the Bible: David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17).
The Story:
The Israelites are at war with the Philistines. The armies face each other across the Valley of Elah. Among the Philistines is their champion, Goliath—a giant over nine feet tall. He wears massive armor and carries a spear with a shaft like a weaver’s rod.
For 40 days, Goliath taunts the Israelites, challenging them to send a warrior to fight him in single combat. His challenge terrifies the Israelites, and no one dares to face him.
Meanwhile, David, a young shepherd, is sent by his father Jesse to deliver food to his brothers, who are part of the Israelite army. When David arrives, he hears Goliath’s insults and sees the fear of the soldiers.
David asks, “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” Though others dismiss him because of his youth, David offers to fight Goliath.
King Saul doubts David’s ability but relents when David tells him of his past victories over lions and bears while protecting his sheep. “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine,” David declares.
Saul offers David his armor, but David declines, saying he cannot move in it. Instead, he takes his staff, five smooth stones from a stream, and his sling.
As Goliath advances, David runs toward him. He slings a stone with precision, striking Goliath in the forehead. The giant falls face down to the ground. David then uses Goliath’s own sword to kill him, securing victory for Israel.
